Analysis
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This charcoal drawing was made to demonstration the study of lines, shape, shadows, and highlights. The drawing was also meant to show the different steps of drawing, from completed piece (left) to where it started (right).
The piece shows that to start with, I really need to start with organic shapes. Get a base of proportions on the canvas, or paper. The lines used during that time are fast, and I barley think about them. The good thing about showing this step, is it shows you can always go back and go over the soft lines to get a more finalized shape. In general, the left side of the drawing is a great place to look at for a beginner to see where to start. As for the middle of the piece, it gets more into the detail of drawing. The step of putting emphasis on shadows is shown here. To start that, I used vine charcoal to to get a light shadow, and to get a feel of what the piece is going to look like. I also get more lines down that i may have missed where part of the animal skull when i was just getting a rough sketch down. Then more towards the right of the piece, I got into more detail with the shadows. I took some compressed charcoal and, to start with, just lightly when over where I put the shadows from the vine charcoal.
