The main idea of all of my work comes from learning a new skill or becoming more of a master at a particular skill, alongside three major themes. The themes consistent throughout my pieces of work include: a political or social argument, Mental Health, and self-expression, with the major theme being Mental Health. My goal throughout creating my portfolio was to find myself in my art. A difference, from when I would make art before this IB Art course, was the fact that I wasn't necessarily looking to improve my techniques, or trying new media. However, although it's clear I'm still in the experimental stage of my artistry, I feel I have a much better idea of who I am as an artist, with my themes, media, technique, and even color palette.
The majority of my art inspiration consists of mainly contemporary artists. There are styles in say, expressionism, abstract expressionism, pop art, and more, that explore themes of Mental Health, but the majority of older art such as the baroque period, or neoclassicism, etcetera, consistent with religion and war and royals. I found a lot of inspiration from online sources. This was nerve-racking because I am aware that looking at newer artists, and online, you may not get to have as much information on them. I was, however, able to speak with an artist online. This was an amazing opportunity to have, because I was able to learn about him straight from the source, and even get some information that wasn't online about him. Looking at artists online and seeing multiple different types of media is mainly what inspired me to expand my skills and techniques to other Medias.
I’m keen on combining modge podge, paint, and ink, however using different types of media in one piece you come across the challenges of "do these two different types of media's mix well together", "can this go on top of that", and the always challenging; learning something new that you have never used before. If something comes to me super easily, then sure, I am going to like the piece but I would love it if I knew the challenge in it and that's why I love my IB classes. I am always trying to improve my skills.
The colors that I gravitate towards are warm neutrals: beige and browns, black and white, and with pops of color from the primary colors. The majority of the time I used the warm neutrals was to keep it moody and not draw attention away from the bright colors. I usually use pops of color to identify a main subject. Why I chose colors for my piece Tangled mind for example: A color to represent thoughts getting all tangled up; red because usually red represents passion and anger. Yellow to represent our childlike ways and happiness being stripped away from us, and black for negativity that was consuming us.
The main idea for me, creating all of my work other than self-expression, was always to make people feel empathy. I also like creating political or social arguments, such as my photography pieces, being all about the worst parts and best parts of America, and the multimedia piece, being a lot about climate change. With every single one of my pieces, it was about learning a new skill in some way or another. Especially with my first multimedia piece. I went through many experiments and obstacles.
The body of work that I chose to define me as an artist is all about being about learning something new, as well as political, social, and Mental Health statements, with a hint of self-expression.The color palette that I used to define myself as an artist is all about meaning, to help define my themes. And I do love the older artists in, say the Baroque period, I love the contrast they use with the shadows and the dark colors, but I do love my contemporary artists, and the emotion that they put behind their art. I hope that the emotion that I put into my artwork helps at least one person think about others and the impacts that each person has on another person.
